Engineering Manager Frontend

  • Hybrid
    • Haarlem, Noord-Holland, Netherlands

Job description

Are you energized by leading engineers through a large-scale modernization? Do you thrive on transforming a complex, 15-year-old frontend into a modern, high-performance Web UI architecture? And do you enjoy shaping technical strategy, guiding engineering talent, and turning complexity into something intuitive and powerful? Then this is a great opportunity for you!

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager who will take full ownership of our Web UI team and the future of our frontend stack — combining architectural leadership with people development to deliver a truly state-of-the-art UI experience.

Why This Role Matters

As Engineering Manager, you’ll be at the center of a major transformation. The Web UI is how customers worldwide interact with our optimization technology, and it’s built on a rich, deeply configurable UI library that has evolved over many years. You’ll guide the shift from this legacy foundation to a modern React/TypeScript ecosystem — defining architecture, elevating engineering practices, and enabling the team to build for the next decade.

You will partner closely with our Head of Engineering, acting as a co-architect of our frontend vision. You’ll have real authority to make bold, high-impact technical decisions and introduce modern development approaches, including AI-supported tooling, automation, modular architecture, and best-in-class performance techniques.

Why You’ll Love Working With Us

  • Real technical impact - You lead the engineering team responsible for the UI library powering mission-critical applications used across industries worldwide.

  • A large modernization challenge - You’ll architect and guide the evolution from a 15-year-old codebase to a modern, maintainable, and scalable React/TypeScript architecture — with broad support for thoughtful, forward-looking decisions.

  • High ownership and autonomy - You’re the dedicated leader for the Web UI team, with influence over architecture, frameworks, tooling, quality standards, and long-term engineering strategy.

  • A culture built for senior engineering leadership - Integrity, Openness, Care, and Innovation guide how we work, make decisions, and collaborate.

  • A clear future growth path - Over time, this role can evolve into Product Architect or multi-team leadership, depending on your ambition.

What Makes the Work Unique

Our Web UI is complex and highly configurable — the type of environment where senior engineering leaders thrive. You’ll work with experienced engineers, including domain experts who built the original UI framework, giving you valuable context and partnership as you guide the next evolution.

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Enjoys architecting modernization paths, not just delivering features.

  • Gets energy from structuring complexity and elevating engineering standards.

  • Loves combining hands-on technical leadership with mentoring and team development.

  • Has a pro-AI mindset and wants to advance modern engineering practices.

  • Values clean architecture, scalability, and long-term maintainability.

How You’ll Make an Impact

You’ll spend roughly 70% of your time on technical and strategic leadership, and 30% on people management.

Lead and Grow the Web UI Team (~30%)

  • Mentor, coach, and develop a team of frontend engineers.

  • Foster a high-trust, collaborative engineering culture.

  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and performance development.

Own the Web UI Frontend Strategy (~70%)

  • Define and execute the modernization strategy to React & TypeScript.

  • Shape architectural principles, coding standards, and long-term tech vision.

  • Oversee the migration of a complex legacy codebase and manage technical debt.

  • Champion best practices in performance, accessibility, testing, CI/CD, and AI-enabled workflows.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver scalable, intuitive, user-centric solutions.

What Will Help You Thrive and Be Successful

You’ll excel in this role if you enjoy guiding a team through technical transformation and leading by partnership.

You bring:

  • 5+ years of frontend development experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React preferred), TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, and web platform APIs.

  • 2+ years in an engineering management or technical lead role, with a proven track record of building and developing engineering teams.

  • Expertise in modern frontend tooling, CI/CD practices, automated testing, and agile methodologies.

  • A collaborative and non-hierarchical leadership style, acting as a partner to your team and peers.

  • Strong ownership, taking responsibility, and focusing on solutions.

  • A pro-AI mindset and curiosity for modern engineering practices.

  • Clear and honest communication with all stakeholders.

  • Bonus points for knowledge of C++, mathematical optimization, or data-intensive web applications.

Life at AIMMS: The Good Stuff

You’ll step into a role where your work is visible, valued, and has direct impact on our growth—within a company that combines stability with ambition.

  • A role with a clear line of sight to revenue, pipeline, and customer success.

  • A supportive workplace with short lines, trust, and plenty of room for ownership.

  • A stable environment where structure, teamwork, and quality really matter.

  • Opportunities to grow your skills in ecosystem strategy, indirect sales, and partner management.

  • An office in Haarlem with an open, collaborative, and down-to-earth atmosphere.

Reward & benefits

  • 💰 Competitive salary plus annual bonus.

  • 🧓 Fully paid pension.

  • 🌍 Hybrid work
