Operations Research Engineer
- Hybrid
- Haarlem, Noord-Holland, Netherlands
- Research & Development
Job description
Are you a mathematically-minded engineer who loves turning complex optimization puzzles into elegant, user-friendly software? Do you want to build products that make a real difference? Then this role at AIMMS might be exactly what you're looking for.
Why You’ll Love Working With Us
As an Operations Research Engineer at AIMMS, you'll join the SC Navigator Development Team, working directly on our flagship product: a powerful, AI-enabled solution that makes the sophisticated mathematics of AIMMS accessible to supply chain professionals worldwide. You'll be part of a tight-knit, international team (based in the Netherlands, the US, and Hungary) where passion for the craft and an informal, open culture go hand in hand. Here, you'll have real ownership over your models and features, and you'll see your code directly impact a product used by market leaders like ASML, Hewlett Packard, and Shell.
What You’ll Find Here
Real impact – You build optimization models that are used daily for critical decisions, not one-off analyses that gather dust.
Cutting-edge tech & AI – We're embedding AI into our products, and you'll be at the forefront of that innovation.
Safe, open team – A place where people ask for help, where meetings aren't about shouting, and where your growth is genuinely valued.
Trust & autonomy – No micromanagement. We trust you to take ownership from "what's needed" to "here's the solution."
Flat organization – Short lines of communication where you can grab lunch with the CEO just as easily as with your teammates.
What Makes This Role Meaningful?
At AIMMS, we don't just build software—we build tools for a smarter world. As an Operations Research Engineer, you're the bridge between complex mathematical optimization and the end user. You translate strategic questions and customer needs into functional features in SC Navigator. You're stepping in at a unique moment: we've just completed a major modernization, meaning you'll build on a solid, future-proof foundation. Plus, AIMMS is growing fast—we're aiming to double in size over the next five years, which opens up real opportunities for your career growth.
How You’ll Make an Impact
You will:
Design & build optimization models – You'll use the AIMMS toolbox to develop and enhance SC Navigator based on customer feedback and product strategy.
Integrate Python & AI – You'll play a key role in adding AI capabilities to our applications.
Collaborate across borders – You'll work daily with teammates in the US and Netherlands, and with our partner
sin Hungary.
Translate business into technology – You'll work closely with the Supply Chain team and WebUI team to ensure what you build truly adds value for customers.
Own your work end-to-end – Within six months, you'll be able to independently design, implement, and deliver features.
Job requirements
What Will Help You Thrive and Be Successful
You’ll be a great fit if you bring:
Strong mathematical foundation – An MSc in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Econometrics, or Mathematics.
Development experience – You've built optimization models (e.g., in Python or with solvers). AIMMS experience is a huge plus, but we'll teach you.
AI mindset – You're comfortable with Python and genuinely excited about how AI can enhance optimization.
User-centric thinking – You build not just what's technically possible, but what actually helps the business user.
Strong communication skills – You're comfortable asking clarifying questions and, over time, engaging directly with customers.
Self-directed – You thrive in an environment with lots of freedom and know when to reach out for help.
Teamwork – You naturally think "we" rather than "I" and support others in achieving their goals.
Comfort with distributed teams – You're happy working across time zones with people from many different backgrounds.
Life at AIMMS: The Good Stuff
You’ll join a company where deep technology meets real-world impact—and where people genuinely care about what they build and how they work together.

AIMMS: Who We Are (and why it matters)
It all started in 1989, when we saw a huge untapped potential for mathematical optimization. Since then, AIMMS has touched many aspects of people’s daily lives—from the electricity delivered to our homes and the distribution of vaccines to emission-reduction policymaking. Today, as a product-led SaaS company, we support industries worldwide—from logistics to sustainability—enabling smarter, faster, and greener choices.
We’re a diverse, collaborative, and curious team of over 20 nationalities, with offices in the Netherlands (Haarlem HQ), the US, and Singapore. Working in a self-organized, hybrid way across the globe, we’re guided by four core values - Integrity, Care, Open, and Ambition - which help us give honest feedback, care deeply for our stakeholders, collaborate across teams, and continuously grow our impact.
How AIMMS made impact:
Our platform was used to build applications that helps state utilities buy electricity from hundreds of power stations, ensuring companies and consumers always have power. We optimize daily and real-time purchasing decisions to minimize costs, maintain network stability, and reliably meet demand.
